Paul McCartney or John Lennon... Which Beatle was the better songwriter?

I have always thought Paul was a much better songwriter, but when I shared this opinion with other musicians I have been met with much resistance.

I think McCartney seems to have more control over his instrument and is technically a better musician than John, however, John was always the cool one of the two and tended to write more groundbreaking or progressive songs.  Paul also wrote music that was sweeter and more structurally complex in nature with more chords and sections, while John's songs usually were darker, simpler in structure, and might have more improvisation.

Opinions? Questions? Can anyone confirm this or deny this analysis?

I think I probably prefer Paul McCartney's songs over John Lennon's songs - or at least I tend to prefer the songs that Paul McCartney sang, anyway. I always figured that was how you fcould tell who wrote what - and I know I definitely prefer Wings material over John Lennon's post- Beatles era. LOL But then again, I'm partial to the drummer from Wings - Joe English.

I like Paul McCartney for Blackbird, Yesterday, Helter Skelter, Here, There, and Everywhere,  These songs are signature songs that gained Paul his fame and fortune with the Beatles.

The only thing that makes me not like Paul, or gives me an odd feeling is the divorce between he and Heather Mills.  Why did he not sign a prenuptial agreement?  I guess he was lonely after Linda (she seemed like a cool lady), but Heather sure did turn out to be a major b!tc@.

Wow, Great thread topic its like disgussing Religion with me who is better John or Paul
I guess you really have to disect them to get at the root:

Paul- The real musician, technically the better songwritter alone and after the beatles, the shear number of them can attestify to his greatness. He was the inspiration for SSGG Peppers and can
be creditied with being the fans favorite.Probably the best voice of the Four, great guitarist, bassist and Pianist....knew when to add horns-Genious

John- The Obvious leader of the band, directed the more from "within" than infront. It was he who pushed for them to go off to Germany and get tight learn their chops. His influence
was felt while the songs went from written form to recorded form, he was the studio dog, the Producer, arranger with George Martin. He made Pauls songs better, made Georges songs Better, even Ringo would have never had any were it not from Johns pushing...Does that make him less of a musician ?
One would ask Was, " All along the Watchtower" a bad song befor Jimi took it from Dylan and turned it into a Monster. That is what Lennon did to Beatles songs and Ideas, he made them Monsters.

I ask you to also look at the songs they wrote together- the industry was invaded for the longest while in the 60s with songs copywritten by: Lennon and McCartney  even today people say "they"
    are the industry standard.

Alone and with Wings,  Paul wrote good songs some even Great .
John worte some songs that were good even great
but their strength came from each others passion for the craft of writting and knowing when to say, hey what do you think ?  Then came Gold...Platnum ~ Legend

Id say maybe John Lennon was the Alexander the Great of Music~
What would the 60s have been like without the Beatles ?
The Love movement ?  The hair movement ?  even fashion...

    but in the END~
the love you take,  is equal to the love you make.
